Map: Proposed Steckman Ridge Storage

Steckman Ridge, LP (Steckman Ridge) received approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) to develop and operate a natural gas storage facility with 12 billion cubic feet of working capacity in Bedford County, Pennsylvania.

The Steckman Ridge storage project is a joint venture owned equally by subsidiaries of Spectra Energy Corp and New Jersey Resources.

For information or questions about the project, landowners and the public may contact Steckman Ridge’s Landowner Hotline toll free at 1-877-379-0338.

Project Benefits

Given its strategic location between new natural gas supplies from the East, Mid-continent and Rocky Mountain areas, and its close proximity to existing interstate pipelines serving the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions, Steckman Ridge will become an integral part of the Northeast energy market, allowing it to serve key customers, including local distribution companies, power generators, and marketers.

The project will offer these markets the ability to manage price volatility, supply security, diversity, and reliability during peak winter and summer months.

Steckman Ridge will provide a variety of flexible market based storage services which can be customized to meet shippers’ specific requirements.

Service Offerings

  • Multi-cycle service
  • Park / Loans

In 2007, Steckman Ridge held an open season for customers seeking multi-turn natural gas storage. The interest expressed by customers far exceeded the facility’s proposed working capacity. Bids totaling approximately five times the capacity were received, clearly demonstrating the demand for natural gas storage in the Northeast.

Project Review

On June 5, 2008, Steckman Ridge received from FERC authorization to convert, install, construct, own, operate and maintain a natural gas storage facility in Bedford County. FERC is the federal agency that authorizes the interstate transmission of natural gas and the storage of natural gas.

With construction under way, Steckman Ridge expects the project to be placed into service in April 2009. The project facilities include a compressor station, 23 storage wells and a storage field pipeline network consisting of approximately 7 miles of 16-inch diameter trunk line pipelines and approximately 3.5 miles of 6-inch and 8-inch diameter well lateral pipelines.

Since June 2007, Steckman Ridge participated in the FERC Pre-Filing Process to encourage and facilitate early participation by all parties interested in the project. An application was filed with FERC in November 2007.

During the pre-application and post-application periods, FERC conducted a thorough review of the project, evaluating the need for the facilities, the locations for the proposed compressor station and storage field pipeline network, and the environmental impact of the project.

Steckman Ridge will continue to seek input from landowners, government agencies and interested parties, and work with them to identify issues.

Steckman Ridge has established a Landowner Hotline to respond to any questions or concerns about the project and construction. Landowners and the public may contact Steckman Ridge toll free at 1-877-379-0338.
