Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline, L.L.C. (Maritimes) is proposing to expand its natural gas pipeline system to transport additional natural gas supplies and provide enhanced reliability to customers in the Northeastern United States, where energy demand continues to increase steadily. This expansion is known as the Maritimes Phase IV Project.
The Phase IV Project will develop the pipeline infrastructure necessary to transport new volumes of natural gas, helping to ensure more reliable, flexible and cost-effective service. The new supplies will offer greater energy diversity and security, intensifying energy competition while enhancing air quality in the region.
During the first quarter of 2005, Maritimes held an Open Season during which potential customers demonstrated a significant interest in additional capacity on the Maritimes pipeline system. The open season resulted in Maritimes executing a precedent transportation agreement with Repsol YPF to transport 730,000 Dth/d of natural gas sourced from the proposed Canaport LNG terminal near Saint John, New Brunswick. Canaport LNG is a joint venture of Repsol YPF and Irving Oil Limited. Maritimes is planning to provide the transportation of these new volumes by November of 2008.
The expansion of the Maritimes system will result in an increase of approximately 418,000 Dth/d from the current mainline design capacity with minimal impact to landowners, communities and the environment.
