J-2 Loop Project
- Location: Medford and Somerville, Massachusetts
- Scope: Approximately 2 miles of 14-inch diameter loop pipeline
- Interconnects: NSTAR Gas Company
- Ownership Interest: 100 percent Spectra Energy
- Projected Completion Date: Fall 2009

Spectra Energy is proposing to extend its Algonquin Gas Transmission pipeline to enhance natural gas reliability in the greater Boston metropolitan region.
The J-2 Loop Project will provide additional volumes and pressure support to NSTAR Gas Company, a local distribution company serving the area. The proposed facilities will help NSTAR continue to meet current residential and commercial needs while preparing to accommodate future demands for clean-burning natural gas.
The Project will install approximately two miles of 14-inch diameter loop pipeline and other facilities in the greater Boston communities of Medford and Somerville. A significant portion of the Project is expected to be constructed within existing roadways and paved parking areas. Algonquin will make every effort to minimize the Project’s impact on landowners and the communities.
To construct, own and operate the Project, Algonquin must receive approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), the federal agency that authorizes the interstate transmission of natural gas and the storage of natural gas. An application will be filed with FERC this spring.
FERC will conduct a thorough review of the project, evaluating the need for the facilities, the locations for the proposed pipeline, and the environmental impact of the project.
Throughout this process, Algonquin will seek input from landowners, government agencies and interested parties, and work with them to identify issues related to the proposed facilities.
Algonquin has established a Landowner Hotline to respond to any questions or concerns about the Project. Landowners and the public may contact the Project toll free at (800) 470-9333.
The Project is expected to begin operations in the fall of 2009.
