Union Gas Launches Program for Local Families in Need

Sudbury community partners play key role in promoting new conservation program

SUDBURY, ONTARIO – Representatives from Union Gas, the Canadian Red Cross and the Social Planning Council gathered today to unveil a new program that provides energy conservation tools for families in financial need. Offered for the first time in Sudbury, participating households can realize up to $200 in savings every year on their energy bills.

Through the Union Gas Helping Homes Conserve program, qualifying households receive up to two energy-efficient massage showerheads, foam pipe insulation, a programmable thermostat and a water-saving bathroom and kitchen aerator. All products with the exception of the aerators are installed free-of-charge by a professional technician. Participating community agencies play a key role in raising awareness of the program amongst their clients.

“We are very proud to be working with the Canadian Red Cross and the Social Planning Council of Sudbury,” said Doug French, District Manager, Union Gas. “Through this partnership, families in the greatest need are given access to tools that will reduce their energy costs, while at the same time, help to protect our environment.”

For their assistance in promoting the program to their clients, Union Gas donated $10,000 to each agency to support the continuation of their work serving the Sudbury community.

Union Gas also held a free Home Energy Conservation Workshop for the agencies’ clients. Participants were provided information on low-cost and no-cost solutions to save energy around the home. The afternoon was topped off with a barbecue lunch for 200 people at Sudbury Market Square.

“This event offers our clients, who are struggling financially, to pick up energy saving tips for the home, while sharing a meal with friends and neighbours,” said Lynn Stevens, Housing Coordinator, Canadian Red Cross. “I can’t tell you how much something like this can brighten someone’s day.”
