Safety
Safety is the top priority for Spectra Energy. Our vision is that Spectra Energy employees and contractors at every level will demonstrate personal commitment to continuous safety improvement, resulting in a zero-injury and zero–work-related illness culture.
Our injury rate performance among employees, measured as total recordable injury frequency rate, diminished from 2007 to 2010. Our lost workday case frequency performance improved slightly. We did see an improvement in contractor safety performance, reflecting our increased focus in this area including the revision of our environmental, health and safety (EHS) policy to hold all contractors and suppliers accountable for understanding and meeting applicable EHS requirements. Our contractor recordable injury rate performance continues to improve.
Vehicle safety remains a challenge for us. Our vehicle incident frequency rate improved from 2008 to 2009, but both did not improve in 2010.
Our approach to sustained safety improvement emphasizes the importance of management leadership and participation and personal ownership of safety. In addition, our approach includes:
- Enhancing safety awareness and behavior modification
- Recognizing safety successes and communicating safety challenges
- Investigating incidents and learning from them to prevent a recurrence
- Providing relevant safety information to contractors and requiring them to provide proper training for the safe performance of their work
In 2009 we put particular emphasis on three areas to improve safety awareness and performance:
- Risk assessment—we studied vehicle safety risks across Spectra Energy and recommended risk reduction strategies.
- Cross-organization alignment—we developed corporate-wide electrical safety guidelines, centralized EHS computer-based training modules and implemented a standard practice of posting safety bulletins on the employee website for major incidents.
- Employee survey – we obtained information about how our employees view our safety behavior and performance and are using this feedback as a basis for action.
