Management Approach – Social Indicators

We have formal processes in place to assess and monitor our impact on communities, and we conduct environmental and social impact assessments for new projects and on-going operations in consultation with local stakeholders and in accordance with company policies and government regulations. Community
SO1 Programs to assess and manage operational impacts on communities We have formal processes in place to assess and monitor our impact on communities, and we conduct environmental and social impact assessments for new projects and on-going operations in consultation with local stakeholders and in accordance with company policies and government regulations. Corruption
SO2 Percent and number of business units analyzed for corruption risk 100 percent of Spectra Energy's business units are subject to corruption risk assessments.
SO3 Percent of employees trained in anti-corruption policies and procedures All employees receive required training in the Code of Business Ethics (Code), which includes anti-corruption policies and procedures. New employees are required to complete training in the Code within 5 days of being hired. In 2009, we revised the Code to address contractors, service providers and suppliers.
SO4 Actions taken in response to corruption incidents Spectra Energy does not publicly report breaches of our Code of Business Ethics. All allegations of breaches to the Code of Business Ethics are investigated. In our 2009 sustainability report, Spectra Energy provides summary data on ethics reporting in the Governance section of the report under Charter and Code of Business Ethics. As appropriate, findings are reported to the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors.
Public Policy
SO5 Public policy positions and participation and lobbying We track proposed legislation so that we may advocate the company's position. We engage with governments at the state, provincial and federal levels in Canada and the U.S. Our key public policy issues and involvement with trade organizations that lobby public policy issues are discussed in Public Policy Participation.
SO6 Total value of financial and in-kind contributions for political purposes Spectra Energy Corp Political Action Committee (Spectra-DCP PAC) is the voluntary, non-partisan  employee political action committee for Spectra Energy in the United States. PAC contributions are publicly disclosed in Spectra-DCP PAC filings with requisite state and federal election commissions and agencies, and in Political Involvement and Contributions.

In addition, Spectra Energy, including its business units and affiliates, on occasion, make financial contributions to registered political parties, registered political action committees, or registered candidate campaigns associated with political fundraising events and activities, consistent with the laws and regulations of each jurisdiction in which the company conducts business.  Contributions on behalf of Spectra Energy are made in compliance with all applicable federal, state or provincial laws and in accordance with Spectra Energy’s Charter and Code of Business Ethics.
