Environmental Indicators¹

Management Approach: Our environmental strategy remains focused on meeting or exceeding compliance requirements with applicable laws and regulations. We also analyze and adopt best practices for managing operational and environmental risks.

Over Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) policy holds all contractors and suppliers accountable for understanding and meeting applicable EHS requirements. A standardized platform is used for recording and tracking environmental, health and safety (EHS) data.

IndicatorDescriptionReported2012 Spectra Energy Response
Materials

EN1

Materials used by weight or volume.

Not

We do not currently track this information. However, in 2010, our U.S. Transmission business conducted waste minimization pilot programs at four facilities that identified opportunities for increased recycling and reduction of hazardous waste. This resulted in improved waste management and recycling practices at a further seven facilities in 2011. Due to the success of this program, waste minimization will be rolled out to additional facilities in 2012. Evaluating material use are a part of these waste minimization projects.

EN2

Percentage of materials used that are recycled input materials.

Energy

EN3

Direct energy consumption by primary energy source.

Fully

Natural gas is our primary direct energy source. The amount of natural gas used to create energy is quantified for the purposes of calculating and reporting direct greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions data can be found in the print sustainability report on pages 17 and in the online Data Tables. In addition, the amount of primary electricity use is documented in the Data Tables.

Energy Consumption (in mega joules)
Electricity Use for 2011 was 6022.8 and in 2010 it was 4078.8

EN4

Indirect energy consumption by primary source.

Fully

1,672.57 thousand MWh (6.02 gigajoules) of electricity was used in 2011. Spectra Energy purchases 100 percent of its electricity from Canada and the United States. When Spectra Energy purchases electricity it does not directly request power generated from renewable sources. However, a significant portion of Spectra Energy’s purchased electricity in some of its operating areas, such as British Columbia (BC), does come from renewable sources such as those from BC Hydro.

EN5

Energy saved due to conservation and efficiency improvements.

Fully

See Achieving Business Efficiencies and Enhancing Customer Efficiency.

EN6

Initiatives to provide energy-efficient or renewable energy based products and services, and reductions in energy requirements as a result of these initiatives.

Fully

See Growing our Business, Achieving Business Efficiencies and Enhancing Customer Efficiency.

Union Gas provides extensive energy efficiency products and services.

EN7

Initiatives to reduce indirect energy consumption and reductions achieved.

Fully

Flexible work policies (9/80), programs to support use of mass transit, van pooling, use of teleconferences and energy efficiency practices in our office buildings are some of the ways that we reduce indirect energy consumption; however, we do not currently calculate the energy reductions that result from all of these programs. Three of Union Gas' customer service centers are built to LEED Gold Certification standards, and their construction included an evaluation and provision of alternative transport as well as energy efficient design and construction.

Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions from employee travel are reported in Spectra Energy's submission to the Carbon Disclosure Project.

Water

EN8

Total water withdrawal by source.

Partially

See Assessing the Use of Water.

EN9

Water sources significantly affected by withdrawal of water.

Not

We do not currently track this information.

EN10

Percentage and total volume of water recycled and reused.

Fully

See Assessing the Use of Water.

Biodiversity

EN11

Location and size of land owned, leased, managed in, or adjacent to, protected areas and areas of high biodiversity value outside protected areas.

Partially

Information is tracked at the site and facility level per ESIA requirements. ESIAs for major projects are publically available at the following NEB and FERC websites.

EN12

Description of significant impacts of activities, products, and services on biodiversity in protected areas and areas of high biodiversity value outside protected areas.

Partially

Information is tracked at the site and facility level per ESIA requirements. ESIAs for major projects are publically available at the following NEB and FERC websites.

EN13

Habitats protected or restored

Partially

Information is tracked at the site and facility level per ESIA requirements. ESIAs for major projects are publically available at the following NEB and FERC websites.

Reporting on partnerships and collaboration to protect biodiversity can be found under Stewarding the Land Responsibly.

EN14

Strategies, current actions, and future plans for managing impacts on biodiversity.

Fully

See Stewarding the Land Responsibly.

EN15

Number of IUCN Red List species and national conservation list species with habitats in areas affected by operations, by level of extinction risk.

Partially

Information is tracked at the site and facility level per ESIA requirements. ESIAs for major projects are publically available at the following NEB and FERC websites.

Emissions, Effluents and Waste

EN16

Total direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions by weight.

Fully

CO₂ equivalents (direct and indirect) emissions were 10.2 million metric tons in 2011. See Data Tables and Environment.

Methodology and standards associated with data is disclosed in Spectra Energy’s response to the Carbon Disclosure Project.

EN17

Other relevant indirect greenhouse gas emissions by weight.

Fully

Indirect CO₂ equivalents of 956,000 metric tons were emitted in 2011. See Data Tables and respecting the Environment.

EN18

Initiatives to reduce GHG emissions, and reductions achieved

Fully

Achieving Business Efficiencies and Enhancing Customer Efficiency and Focus on Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

EN19

Emissions of ozone-depleting substances by weight.

Fully

Ozone depleting substances are used in refrigeration systems at several of our facilities. Compliance and reporting requirements associated with their use are managed at the site level.

EN20

NOx, SOx, and other significant air emissions by type and weight.

Fully

See Data Tables and Focus on Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

EN21

Total water discharge by quality and destination.

Partially

Water use is reported in Assessing the Use of Water.

The total volume of water discharged by destination, treatment method, and reuse is tracked at the business unit level and reported to regulatory agencies as required.

EN22

Total weight of waste by type and disposal method.

Fully

See Data Tables and Reducing Waste.

EN23
