Union Gas Receives Junior Achievement of Chatham-Kent Award

This year, Junior Achievement of Chatham-Kent presented Union Gas with a Corporate Volunteer Team Award in recognition of the outstanding contribution of eight Union Gas employees who volunteered their time to teach 12 classes, ranging from the Economics of Success to Business Basics, in classrooms around Chatham-Kent.

The award was accepted by Union Gas employees Simon Lam, Heather Beselaere, Mike French and Charles Debeau at the organization's annual Volunteer Recognition Luncheon. This event commends volunteers throughout Chatham who have helped fulfill the program's dream of teaching financial and management skills to young children.

Heather, who considers this program to be essential for elementary school-age children, said, "I believe it is important that young people become informed of their choices and financial responsibilities, even at a young age."

Heather has just completed her second year volunteering with Junior Achievement, which gives her a gratifying feeling. "It's a really great program. It's so rewarding to see children get excited about something and to be learning at the same time."

Heather believes that one of the greatest assets of Junior Achievement is the ability to make such a large difference in a short amount of time. Junior Achievement volunteers dedicate only a few hours of their time each year, while making a lifelong impact on children's lives.

Working through the Junior Achievement program is a true reflection of Union Gas and Spectra Energy values. All employees are encouraged and empowered to give back to their communities through active volunteerism, and our volunteers have demonstrated this by making a difference in the future of our youth. In turn, Union Gas and Spectra Energy provide financial support for numerous Junior Achievement programs in Canada and the United States.

Spectra Energy Supports Science Education

Throughout British Columbia (B.C.) and Alberta, the Vancouver Aquarium's award-winning mobile classroom, "AquaVan," brings the lure of science and sea to hundreds of schools and inland communities through an engaging and interactive education experience.

Children getting a hands-on look at a starfish. As a tour sponsor of AquaVan's Spring 2011 tour of Alberta and northeastern B.C., Spectra Energy is helping to ensure that the AquaVan experience can be brought to students as far north as Fort Nelson, with stops throughout B.C. and Alberta.

The sponsorship helps bring the interactive education experience to children who may not have direct access to the splendors of marine life. This kind of opportunity can make a big impact on a child.

Approximately 10,000 students are exposed to the AquaVan program each year. Since its inception in 1994, the program has been honored several times for outstanding achievement in educational programming. In the past year, AquaVan traveled to 45 communities throughout B.C. and Alberta - many of which are home to Spectra Energy families.

Like AquaVan, the Science World on the Road program (another traveling science road show) is introducing children to the possibility of careers in science through fun presentations on energy, pressure, force and creativity. The program, which Spectra Energy also sponsors, has been visiting schools throughout B.C. since 2005.

In 2010/11, the Science World On the Road team performed over 250 shows for more than 40,000 students. The playful presentations support the mission of the organization: to engage British Columbians in science and to inspire future science and technology leadership in B.C.
