Map: Sabal Trail Transmission Expansion

  • Scope: Approximately 465 miles of 36-inch new pipeline
  • Capacity: Targeting up to 1 billion cubic feet per day (Bcf/d)
  • Ownership: 100% Sabal Trail Transmission, LLC – a joint venture of Spectra Energy Corp and NextEra Energy, Inc.
  • Project Completion Date: May 2017

Sabal Trail Transmission, LLC (Sabal Trail), a joint venture of Spectra Energy Corp and NextEra Energy, Inc., is an interstate natural gas pipeline project that will able to transport over 1 billion cubic feet (per day) of natural gas over a nearly 500 mile distance between Alabama, Georgia and Florida. Transportation services for FP&L’s power generation needs will begin in May 2017.

This new pipeline infrastructure will also benefit the Southeast region of the United States by making available additional supplies and new energy infrastructure to support other regional power generators and the growing demand for clean-burning natural gas. The Sabal Trail underground pipeline will deliver affordable, clean natural gas supplies, while increasing the reliability of the region’s energy delivery system and positively impacting the economy in the Southeast region of the United States.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) exclusively authorizes the construction of new interstate natural gas facilities. FERC is also the lead federal agency responsible for conducting environmental reviews of interstate natural gas projects in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act.

In October 2013, Sabal Trail entered into FERC’s “Pre-file” process. During the Pre-file process, Sabal Trail held nearly 50 public meetings with landowners, public officials, government agencies and community members to provide information and gather input on the Sabal Trail Project. The Pre-file docket number was PF14-1-000. You may visit FERC’s website at www.FERC.gov and enter this docket number to follow the Sabal Trail Project.

  • Construction of approximately 460 miles of 36-inch-diameter mainline natural gas pipeline that originates in Tallapoosa County, Alabama and ends at an interconnection with Florida Southeast Connection’s proposed project in Osceola County, Florida
  • Construction of approximately 14 miles of 36-inch-diameter natural gas pipeline extending from a proposed compressor station in Osceola County, Florida to Florida Gas Transmission’s existing natural gas pipeline in Orange County, Florida;
  • Construction of approximately 24 miles of 24-inch-diameter natural gas pipeline in Marion and Citrus Counties, Florida;
  • Construction of five (5) new compressor stations in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, Dougherty County, Georgia, and Suwannee,  Marion, and Osceola Counties in Florida; and
  • Construction of six (6) new meter stations

A unique feature of the this pipeline system will be to utilize or parallel a variety of exiting utility corridors (including expanding existing pipeline systems in Alabama and Florida), significantly reducing overall impacts for construction and operation. We anticipate placing the Sabal Trail Project fully into service in May 2017.
