Charitable Giving & Online Grant Application

The criteria that Spectra Energy considers when evaluating a grant request are listed below.

PLEASE NOTE: On February 27, 2017, Enbridge Inc. and Spectra Energy Corp closed their merger transaction. Due to this merger, we are not accepting grant applications at this time.

Application Process

Spectra Energy utilizes an online grant request process to consider funding requests. To begin the process, please carefully read the qualifications and other considerations outlined below. If your organization qualifies, you may submit an Online Grant Application to begin the application process. Please note that funds are limited and, unfortunately, we are unable to support all requests.

To be eligible for a Spectra Energy charitable contribution, charitable organizations must meet the following criteria:

  • In the U.S., organizations must have a current and active 501(c)(3) verification from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) or be a U.S. governmental subdivision, such as a school or state hospital. In Canada, grant recipients must be recognized as a charitable organization registered with the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
  • Be applying for programs and services that fall within Spectra Energy's defined focus areas
  • Be located in the communities that we serve (where we have assets, employees or do business)
  • Have strong fiscal management and governance practices.

In alignment with our vision of becoming the "Partner of Choice" for our communities and the "Employer of Choice", Spectra Energy invests in three primary areas of focus in communities where we live and work. Spectra Energy invests in qualified organizations and programs that promote:

Education and Workforce Development

  • Programs focused on education for at-risk youth to ensure success in life
  • Pre-K through 12 education with an emphasis in math, science, technology and business acumen
  • Post high school/secondary school education
  • Technical and professional accreditation

Community Vitality

  • Environmental education, conservation and research
  • Targeted arts/culture giving
  • Safety
  • Health and human services (primarily supported by our annual United Way campaign)
  • Community enhancement

Employee Support and Volunteerism

  • This focus area addresses employee-initiated projects

Please note: Inclusiveness and diversity initiatives underpin all three areas of focus.

Spectra Energy does not provide charitable contributions to the following types of requests or organizations:

  • Capital campaigns and endowments
  • Multi-year gifts, commitments or pledges
  • Grants to individual agencies of the United Way, because contributions to health and human service organizations are made through significant support of the United Way by Spectra Energy and its employees (except through our employee driven volunteer grant and matching gift program as applicable)
  • Organizations that discriminate by race, creed, gender, age or national origin
  • Political activities and organizations
  • Individuals
  • Athletics, including individual sports teams and all-star teams
